Miyazaki’s Nichinan City | Obi Castle, Udo Jingu & More

In addition to Obi Castle and the preserved Obi town, the warm Nichinan City is also home to Udo Jingu, a shrine that is integrally tied to Japanese mythohistory. The shrine is built into the mouth of a cave and is definitely worth visiting while you’re in Nichinan City. There is a ritual whereby men throw an undama with their left hand and women throw with their right. People who can control the stone’s trajectory find their wishes to come true.

When it comes to Miyazaki, most people are only aware of the prefecture’s most iconic attractions, like Takachiho Gorge and Amano Iwato Shrine. Alas, there’s so much more to Miyazaki than just these well-known spots. For example, in the southern…

The Stairway to Heaven | Preparing for Your Tip to Japan

Steep stone stairs flanked by rows of vibrant vermillion torii gates leading up the forested slopes of Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto, Japan.

This is going to be a relatively shorter article than I normally write. You see, I currently have family visiting from overseas (which is actually the inspiration for this rant) and will be attending to them for the next few…

Hiroshima’s Town of Joge | Backyard Tourism Vol. 17

The main street of Joge, Hiroshima, lined with traditional white-walled machiya buildings and Edo-period (1603–1868) architecture, with a few locals walking and festival decorations visible under a partly cloudy sky.

Recently, I ventured out to the Setouchi region of Japan to catch up with friends working in the local tourism industry. While there, we hit up a lesser-known festival in Hiroshima’s city of Fuchu that was complete with fireworks, musical…

In Imabari City | A Shipbuilding Town in Ehime Prefecture

Sunset view of the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge stretching across the Seto Inland Sea, connecting a series of small islands to the Takanawa Peninsula in Ehime.

Welcome to Ehime Prefecture’s Imabari City. Located in Shikoku on the far side of the famed Shimanami Kaido — a series of bridges that connects Shikoku with Japan’s main island of Honshu — this important shipbuilding town is the second-largest city in all of…

Time on Trains | Why I Prefer Traveling by Railways in Japan

The Tokaido Shinkansen speeding past rice fields at sunset, with the silhouette of Mt. Fuji in the distance and golden reflections on the water.

As I sit down to write this, it’s early in the morning and I am yet again zipping across Japan on a bullet train. My destination this time is Okayama Station, where I’ll catch another limited express train that will…

Japan’s Twelve Original Castles | The OG Defensive Dozen

Stone pathway leading up to the main keep of Himeji Castle, flanked by traditional white plaster walls and stone defenses, with the iconic multi-tiered castle visible in the background.

The mention of Japan’s twelve surviving original castles has come up a number of times now over the years. Given the repeated frequency, it’s high time that there finally be a standalone feature on this lasting dozen of medieval fortresses,…

Matsuyama’s Dogo Onsen | One of Japan’s Oldest Hot Springs

The main public bathhouse in Dōgo Onsen is known as Dōgo Onsen Honkan and recently underwent renovations lasting about five and a half years. On the second floor, there are many tatami rooms for customers to relax after taking a long bath in either Kami-no-Yu or Tama-no-Yu. For the wealthy, there is also a private “Soaring Room” available.

Previously, in my exhaustive exposé on Matsuyama City, I introduced the hot spring town of Dogo Onsen. Alas, as it was an overview of all things to see and do in the region, I didn’t really have time to go…

Matsuyama City | The Amazing Capital of Ehime Prefecture

Sunset view over Matsuyama City from the rooftops of Matsuyama Castle, with golden light spilling across the skyline and the Seto Inland Sea glowing in the distance.

Despite living there for most of my adult life, Tokyo can be overwhelming. While you can find pockets of peace scattered throughout the prefecture (yes, Tokyo is a prefecture), the urban chaos is something I often feel the need to…

The Nemophila of Toneri Park | Backyard Tourism Vol. 16

A vibrant field of blooming blue nemophila flowers at Toneri Park in Tokyo, with visitors in the background enjoying the spring scenery under a clear blue sky.

Let’s be frank. When it comes to springtime flowers in Japan, the cherry blossoms steal all of the limelight. Widely considered to be iconic of the country’s very year, millions of tourists flock to Japan to see these pink pretties.…

Kitakami Tenshochi Park | A Top Cherry Blossom Festival

A horse-drawn carriage carrying visitors along a cherry blossom-lined path at Kitakami Tenshochi Park in Iwate Prefecture, Japan. This iconic springtime experience, similar to the cherry blossom scenes at Hirosaki Park, highlights the beauty of Tohoku’s lesser-known sakura destinations. The tunnel of pink flowers and peaceful atmosphere make Kitakami a perfect pairing with a visit to Hirosaki.

Every year, I travel north to Tohoku to chase the peak bloom of the cherry blossoms. You see, unlike in Tokyo, where the petals are all long gone by the middle of April, Japan’s northern reaches bloom a lot later…

Hirosaki Castle Park | Japan’s Best Cherry Blossom Festival

Many photographers flock to this bridge in Hirosaki Park during the night time to take a photo of it set against the backdrop of the illuminated cherry blossoms. It’s an iconic springtime scene in Aomori.

Over the years, I’ve mentioned Hirosaki Castle Park on this blog a number of times now in other articles about the cherry blossoms, but I’ve never gotten around to featuring it. So, it’s high time that I get around to…

Hanamiyama Park | Fukushima City’s Top Cherry Blossom Spot

A panoramic view of Hanamiyama Park in full bloom, with vibrant cherry blossoms and other flowering trees covering the hillsides, set against the backdrop of Fukushima City and distant snow-capped mountains.

When it comes to cherry blossoms, Fukushima Prefecture is truly a fantastic place. Home to trees like the famed Miharu Takizakura, you’re truly spoiled for choice when it comes to springtime blossoms in Fukushima. That all said, while there are…

Motoara River Cherry Blossom Avenue | A Saitama Secret Spot

A peaceful spring day along the Motoara River Cherry Blossom Avenue in Saitama, Japan. Two people walk side by side beneath a canopy of cherry blossoms in full bloom, with soft pink petals framing the pathway. A small bridge in the background adds to the quaint atmosphere, while others relax along the riverbanks and stone steps, enjoying the seasonal beauty.

In recent years, I’ve been on something of a crusade to promote some of Japan’s lesser-known cherry blossom spots. You see, now that the pandemic is well behind us, places like Yoyogi Park and Chidorigafuchi are so painfully packed with…

Sakura’s Sakura | Cherry Blossoms in Chiba Prefecture

Located in Sakura-shi, Chiba-ken, Sakura was formerly the samurai stronghold of the Chiba clan and is located near Narita airport. The city is best known for its samurai and flowers which come to life in early April around Lake Inba as well as its windmill.

Right now, it’s cherry blossom season in Japan, and it honestly feels like the entire world is here to soak in spring’s natural beauty. As someone who can’t stand crowds, though, the swarms of international visitors that descend on the…

Keen on Kumagaya | A City of Traditional Japanese Fans

Since Kumagaya holds the record for hottest city, you might be inclined to visit the main hall of the Menuma Shodenzan Kangiin temple complex during autumn, early winter or even in January. If you can brave the summer heat though, you can enjoy a local highlight, the Kumagaya Uchiwa Matsuri which has a history dating back to the Edo period and boasts an epic drumming competition.

I originally visited the city of Kumagaya in Saitama Prefecture as part of a five-day tour in the lead-up to the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Arranged by the powers that be, the objective of this FAM trip was to promote…
